Elderly Dry Skin Care
|
Elderly dry skin care is not more complicated or different than the same care for any other age. The reason why dryness is a concern for the elderly is simply because of how the body changes as we get older. With just some knowledge and actions, you can give yourself or your elderly loved one the care needed to naturally decrease the dryness.
Environmental forces, stress, and the aging process can exact a grievous toll on the skin. As the years pass, the production of collagen and elastin decreases and the skin becomes thinner and less elastic. Sunlight can also break down collagen and elastin and cause damage of its own, including discoloration, blotching, and other irregularities. As a result, firm, taut skin begins to sag and wrinkle, and the youthful appearance is lost.
Synergy WorldWide has created a unique formula to support your skin’s ability to resist these destructive forces. Anti-Aging Serum, with Gen III technology, can visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and revitalize how you look. Click the image or link to the right to learn more about Synergy. The Study of Elderly Dry Skin
In the study of skin as an organ of our bodies, the changes that happen over time is a recurring theme. This knowledge leads to specific strategies for care. A baby’s arms and face are the softest of any age group, and as we become elderly, things change resulting in dry skin. In addition to elastin and collagen being created more slowly and less efficiently, older skin is thinner than it is in our younger years. This body organ is made up of layers, and the lower layer is where new cells are formed. The cells you can touch on the surface are actually the oldest cells. As a cells are made, they rise up layer by layer as the top layer is brushed or washed away. We are consistently losing dead cells from the surface of our bodies. This cycle of new cells rising to the surface happens more quickly (resulting in softer skin) when we are young and more slowly when we are elderly (resulting in dry skin). Care that improves the speed and efficiency of this cycle naturally is the best approach.

So What Is to Be Done?
How do we, those of us who are elderly or care for loved ones, take care of our dry skin to achieve the natural softness we remember?
- Know that in the summer you need to use lighter moisturizing lotions than in the winter to care for dryness. This is because the humidity of the air is lower in the winter than in the summer. In lower humidity, our skin dries out faster. And for the elderly, this is especially true.
- Be aware that our skin is thinner when we are older. This means that it is easier for elderly skin to get cut or damaged. Cut or otherwise damaged skin tends to be dry as well. So take extra care with utensils, tools, and areas that could be abrasive or even cut.
- Use extra care in cleaning of your skin. Dead cells mixed with dirt and dust is an invitation to infection.
- However, frequent washing and exposure to water will dry out the skin. A person who is elderly should avoid hot showers or baths because the hotter water evaporates faster, and this removes more moisture than a lukewarm shower or bath.
- Limit the length of your shower or bath. Longer time in or under water means more washing away of the natural oil that keeps moisture in and more evaporation happens.
- Remember that evaporation of water takes moisture away from within, making it dry. Use soaps that offer care because they are also moisturizing soaps.
- Apply a moisturizing care after you get out of the bath or shower, and especially for the elderly even after washing your hands. Be sure to choose the right one.
